Sustainable Art Prize 2023, the winning artist is Lisa Ouakil

Artist Lisa Ouakil is the winner of the Sustainable Art Prize 2023. This award yearly selects an artist or a collective of artists participating in ArtVerona, whose research focuses on the theme of sustainability.
The award ceremony was held on Sunday, 15 October during the ArtVerona event, a partner of the project launched in 2017 as a result of the agreement between the Sustainability Office of the Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, and other universities in Veneto, namely the University of Verona, the University of Padua and IUAV in Venice.
The assessing commission, comprising a commissioner indicated by ArtVerona itself and 4 representatives of the participating universities, chose to award the young artist for “the poetic striving to humanise the landscape, establishing a dialogue between body and naturalistic elements, stating the organicistic paradigm, in order to encourage reconsideration of the human being’s position in relation to the surrounding environment”.
Lisa Oaukil, French by origin, born in 1993, opens her interesting artistic creation to multidisciplinary experimentation, spanning the medium of sculpture and painting, photography and music, with an eye to the collective, performative and public dimension of the work. Her strong sensitivity to the theme of sustainability drives her to create works using environmentally sustainable materials to minimise their environmental impact, while particularly focusing on the associated sensory element.
Each year, the awarding of the Sustainable Art Prize is an opportunity for the winning artists to see their work and research appreciated, and to test themselves against new forms of creation, such as the fusion of art and academic research, by directly involving the student component. Indeed, the award ceremony aims at implementing a project involving the artist and a group of ten students from each participating university to design a work of art related to sustainability issues.
In the course of 2024, the work resulting from this unprecedented experimentation and collaboration will first be exhibited in the spaces of the University of Verona, the leader of this year’s project. It will then travel to the venues of the other universities involved.
