LEDS for Africa seeks volunteers

Project LEDS for Africa was launched in 2018 as a result of the synergistic cooperation between the University of Padua’s LEDS didactic laboratory, a student organisation and teaching laboratory for energy engineering students, and the missionary Father Michael, who has been involved for several years in supporting areas of the world presenting the greatest need.
The activities of project “LEDS for Africa” have so far resulted in the installation of 100 stand- alone domestic photovoltaic systems, a solar pumping system and an AC system for a school. These devices will have a positive impact on the lives of about 100 families (approximately 700 people) in the village of Ponta Cabral, where access to electricity from renewable sources will considerably improve living conditions and offer more opportunities for economic and social exchange for the entire village.
In March 2023, five student members of the project were assigned to the site for their first operational mission involving the installation of the first photovoltaic systems, bringing lighting and energy.
The intervention was structured in such a way as to encourage the participation of inhabitants of Ponta Cabral, and to teach their technician the installation procedure.
The first systems were installed together, while the rest were installed independently by the technician along with a few people from the village.
The next mission is scheduled for March 2024 to install the solar pumping system and any other domestic modules.
In order to finance both the trip and project activities, LEDS for Africa is looking for students from all study programmes who are willing to get involved and help with fundraising.
The project is open to all students who are willing to learn new skills, get involved and try to make a difference in their own small way.
