25 years of Biotechnology at the University of Padua: A seminar open to the public celebrates the degree course’s silver anniversary

What will our future look like thanks to biotechnology? This will be discussed on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the first degree course in Biotechnology at the University of Padua, inaugurated in the 1998/99 academic year thanks to Mario Terzi, a molecular biologist from the University’s Biology Department, and which to date has seen more than 4,000 biotechnologists graduate.
Biotechnology is a transversal discipline by nature, involving no less than eight departments at the University of Padua: Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources and Environment, Biology, Comparative Biomedicine and Nutrition, Molecular Medicine, Animal Medicine, Production and Health, Chemical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The meeting, organised by the departments involved and the Alumni Association of the University of Padua, after the institutional greetings, will feature the speeches of Professor Gerolamo Lanfranchi, honorary professor of Genetics, and Professor Marta Giacomello, the first biotechnology graduate in Padua: together they will retrace the birth and crucial steps of a time – the late 1990s – characterised by great enthusiasm and ferment for biotechnology. Testimonies will follow from alumni Francesco Carpitella (GSK Vaccines), Odra Pinato (Stevanato Group), Giorgio Sordato (Officinae Bio) and Graziano Martello (Department of Biology), now researchers and entrepreneurs, who will recount their paths and achievements. Finally, a round table at the end of the event will see biotechnologists from the academic, business and industrial worlds dialoguing together, trying to outline the development and impact of biotechnology in the culture, healthcare and sustainability of the coming years.
The meeting is open to the publicby prior bookingand will take place on Wednesday 26 June from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Aula Magna Azzone, Polo Vallisneri, Padua.
