Sustainable building management

The University of Padua engages in a wide range of building development programs valued at 420 million euros spent over three years between 2023-2025, in compilance with the main national and international guidelines and certifications related to sustainability, such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Near Zero EnergyBuilding (nZEB) certifications. Many projects focus both on the construction of new sustainable buildings and on the recovery of urban spaces within the historic city center of Padua. Through their sustainable design and high standards, such projects act as an engine of urban regeneration built as strategic infrastructures that serve the University.

Urban regeneration of brownfield sites

PIAVEFUTURA Economic and social sciences Campus
The recovery of the former Piave barracks – a state-owned area of about 51,000 square meters in the center of Padua – will renovate an area that is currently not accessible and optimise the distribution of the University buildings in the city.
The project, which is the result of a competition, will lead to the realisation of a campus where the pre-exhisting renovated buildings will coexist with a central futuristic oval-shaped structure. The Piave Futura Campus will also offer the city a new green area meant to be explored on foot or by bicycle. Preliminary works are in progress.

Fusinato Student House
Built in 1922 as a multi-purpose complex for deserving students, the Fusinato Student House has been listed by the Soprintendenza archeologica, belle arti e paesaggio (Archaeological, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence) among the cultural assets of the Italian state due to its important historical value. Closed since 2005 for security reasons, the complex will be renovated to return to its original function, thus becoming a housing building for students of the Galilean School. The intervention will be carried out by 2024, combining aspects related to improving the building’s performance with cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability and technological innovation, aimed at energy saving and the use of alternative energy sources. Thanks to the focus on the sustainability aspects that characterizes the redevelopment project, the University was awarded with Compraverde Veneto prize in 2021.

Via Campagnola building
The renovation of the complex between Via Canal and Via Campagnola, near the Beato Pellegrino Pole, which is part of a larger urban redevelopment project, with the creation of spaces dedicated to educational activities, multifunctional spaces and a green area for public use intended for citizens, has been completed in its first part with the opening in October 2023 of two classrooms with 250 seats each. The project, characterized by the usual attention to environmental impact, including with the enhancement of archaeological evidence of considerable cultural interest that emerged during the works, also includes the construction of a connecting path between Via Campagnola and Via Canal open to the public. Planning is also underway for a student residence with about 90 beds, which will allow for the rehabilitation of the remaining part of the complex.

“Beato Pellegrino” Campus of Humanistic Sciences
Inaugurated in 2019, the Beato Pellegrino Complex once housed a geriatric hospital and now sits as the headquarters of the University’s Humanistic Centre. Encompassing over 23,000 square meters, the state-of-the-art complex was part of the University’s Sustainable Building and Urban Regeneration Project. The efficiency design offers minimal environmental impact built with renewable resources for optimal energy consumption. As the first gas-free building of the University of Padua, the Beato Pellegrino Complex was awarded recognition by the Italian Energy Service Manager (GSE S.p.A) and the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance.

New buildings

Innovation Hub
In June 2025, the new educational centre housing the School of Engineering was inaugurated.
The building, located in the Padua Exhibition Centre area, was created as a project of urban regeneration and sustainable architecture destined to become a benchmark for teaching, applied research and technology transfer. Spread over four floors with a total surface area of over 7,200 square metres, it houses 14 classrooms for face-to-face teaching, study rooms, computer rooms, a common room, laboratories and flexible spaces. In addition, there are approximately 300 square metres of accessible green areas outside and a public square that is also open to the general public.
Advanced construction technologies and low environmental impact systems (including 308 photovoltaic panels and air quality monitoring sensors) have led to the building obtaining LEED platinum certification.
