A weekend of… rowing!

Yesterday ended, at the Lake of Candia (TO), the First National University Meeting for the North of Italy (NORD 1° Meeting Allievi, Cadetti, Scuola, Universitari, PR3 ID, Master Candia Canavese), organized by ASD 2010 Canottieri Candia, in collaboration with the Regional Committee FIC Piemonte and the Municipality of Candia Canavese.
The University of Padua joined the competition with a delegation of 21 male and female athletes, made up of the students who last year led the University to win the title of Best Rowing University of 2021 and 10 rookies, who took part in the project “Rowing at the University“, promoted by the Italian Rowing Federation (FIC) and entirely dedicated to beginners.
In spite of unfavourable weather conditions and the inexperience of some of the delegation, who were competing in their first national competition, the University team won on Saturday 19 March, first and second place in the mix double category with the athletes Enrico Candini and Allegra Meneghetti, Edoardo Santi and Mélanie Marie Moinard and the first place in the four of a kind composed of Vasco Clerici, Matteo Malachin, Tommaso Turato and Luca Testolin.
On Sunday 20 March, the University of Padua delegation also took third place with the university rookie foursome made up of Leonora Roncon, Giovanni Corradin, Nourah Aboaish and Alessandro Rizzo. In the mixed doubles competition, Edoardo Santi and Allegra Meneghetti won first place, while Linda Vitagliano and Mattia Maculan won third place.
“It was a very important experience for our athletes,” explains coach Gherardo Gamba, “some of whom have only been rowing for a few months, through the University’s ‘Rowing at the University’ project. The results obtained are therefore even more encouraging, demonstrating that the commitment and determination of these months of hard training have borne fruit, offering participants an additional opportunity to test themselves, gain experience and compete at a high competitive level.”
After the debut in Candia, the rowing team of the University of Padua is now preparing for the Second National Meeting of the North scheduled in San Miniato on 14 and 15 May 2022.
This opens a season of important rowing events, healthy sport and competition, demonstrating the University of Padua’s commitment to promoting health, sport and healthy, sustainable lifestyles, in full compliance with Goal 3 – Health and Well-being – of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
