On Monday, 9 January 2023, the Ancient Archives of Palazzo del Bo hosted the presentation to the Rector of the prizes won by the University of Padua’s sailing and rowing teams during the 2021-2022 season.
This highly symbolic moment took place in the presence of our University’s governing body and the Director General. It underscores the University’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles by offering students the opportunity to practise sports in parallel with their studies and – as the Rector pointed out – “to also develop the transversal skills increasingly in demand in the employment scene”.
The teams present have just completed an intensive season of training and competitions, achieving a place on the podium in several disciplines:
- 1st place in Tricolour University Rowing 2021
- 2nd place in the Lion Cup University Dragon Boat Championship 2022 (dragon boat races)
- 2nd place in the Women’s Rowing Palio 2022 (British-style rowing races on historic galleons)
- 3rd place with the sailing boat “Athena” and 5th place in the Paolo Padova Trophy in the 1001 Vela Cup 2021
- 3rd place in the Paolo Padova Trophy and in designing and planning the sailing boat in the 1001 Vela Cup 2022
The ceremony, with welcome speech by Antonio Paoli, Pro-Rector for Welfare and Sports, was attended by Canottieri Padova A.S.D. represented by Rossano Galtarossa and Matteo Finesso. The University has been collaborating for several years with this association for the technical preparation of crews.
Representatives of students who took part in sporting events included: Gherardo Gamba (rowing coach), Lara Perissinotto (Lion Cup coach and 2nd Women’s Rowing Palio), Allegra Meneghetti, Edoardo Santi, Enrico Candini, Tommaso Turato and Riccardo Aramini.
The Metis Vela Unipd team from the Department of Industrial Engineering was also present. It builds the sailing boats and trains the crews taking part in the 1001 Vela Cup, with Professor Andrea Lazzaretto (project leader) and students Marco Pitteri, Emanuele Zampieri, Filippo Santi and Arturo Bevilacqua.
Some sports activities for students have already recommenced in preparation for next season’s competitions. If you wish to participate or need more information, visit the dedicated page.
