Remembrance Day: events taking place in Padua, lest we forget

On the occasion of January 27th, the day established by the United Nations General Assembly for the commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust, Padua and its University organise events and celebrations throughout the city to celebrate what in Italy has been called the Day of Remembrance, according to the law of July 20th, 2000, to “remember the Shoah (extermination of the Jewish people), racial laws, the Italian persecution of Jewish citizens, Italians who have suffered deportation, imprisonment, death, as well as those who, in various camps and alliances, have opposed the project of extermination, and have saved other lives while risking their own and protected the persecuted”.
The institutional ceremony organised by the Municipality will take place at 10.30 am in the Courtyard of Palazzo Moroni. The celebrations in honour of the fallen will follow at the Tempio Nazionale dell’Internato Ignoto with the presence of the rector Don Fabio Artusi, and at the Museo Nazionale dell’Internamento there will be a speech by the Prefect of Padua, Raffaele Grassi, who will hand out the Medals of Honour to the military and civilians deported and interned in the Nazi Lager.
The University of Padua participates in the celebrations with the lectio magistralis of Pieter Lagrou (Université Libre de Bruxelles) “A new European world geography? The Shoah and the World War from the Baltics to the Balkans”, on January 26th in Sala dei Giganti.
